With all of the attention that mini-blinds have received over the years, some consumers are beginning to wonder whether this type of window coverings is suitable for their homes, offices, commercial settings. The following represents a few factors that you might wish to consider before making a determination.
1. Unanticipated Costs – If you already have drapes up, you should first consider the additional costs incurred just to remove the drapery and rods; repair and paint over the holes left in the wall by the rod; and the installation costs to mount the new blinds.
2. Comparative Costs – Generally, blinds are considerably more expensive than draperies as type of covering for most window sizes you will encounter. Blinds can often be 20%–50% more expensive than draperies.
3. Durability Factor – Generally, blinds are damaged more often than drapes on most windows. In actual repeat or frequent use situations, unintentional abuse and accidents can commonly occur resulting in costly damage to blinds. If the metal slats become kinked, aligning cord ladders broken or the mechanical operation becomes inoperative, repair cost can be very expensive. These repair costs can range from 30%–70% of the original blind costs. Some of the largest window covering manufacturers in the country, such as our company, are working in close conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards to provide "child-safe" blinds.
4. Cleaning – Blinds often require cleaning more frequently than draperies. It is difficult to thoroughly clean blinds without either taking them down or paying someone else to professionally clean them for you.
5. Insulation – Although blinds do offer some reflective qualities, they certainly do not offer the significant insulation that drapery fabrics provide by reducing your heat loss through windows up to 70%.
Admittedly, blinds do have a great deal of utility and attractiveness especially in office settings or private homes where some of the aforementioned points are not significant factors. However, the cost savings, durability, cleanability and insulation that draperies provide make them a far more desirable and most of all practical window covering in many applications.
