It has been proven that most heat loss in conventional structures occurs directly through windows even when these windows are energy efficient dual pane. Solar heat and winter cold can penetrate glass surfaces and have a serious effect on room temperatures. In fact, this may account for up to 70% of all heat loss in a typical room.
Increased utilities and heating costs have prompted many people to seek more efficient energy saving window coverings. Draperies with suede or foam backing provide significant insulating qualities.
These attractive materials have several outstanding features which make them real value and consideration when considering window coverings.
They are self-lined fabrics, however, they are not "rubber back" materials. Rather, we use a cotton-acrylic backing which is very durable. This backing provides three distinct advantages over unlined fabrics:
| 1. | It provides residents and tenants with total privacy; |
| 2. | It furnishes significant energy efficient insulating qualities that can lead to substantial savings in heat and air conditioning costs; and |
| 3. | The backing adds to the longevity of the draperies by protecting them against damaging sun rot of the material. |
One other advantage that is afforded by backed draperies is some protection against light water staining.
Many self lined fabrics are also washable. These can be safely washed in cold water and on gentle cycle. Simply pull the drapes out while still damp and hang back on the rods above the windows. The pleats can be re-formed by placing your hands on either side of each pleat and pressing them together; running your hand from the top of the pleat down to the bottom. Washable draperies can be safely spot cleaned using a damp wet cloth with mild soap.
