Many of us have already learned the hard way that getting "a real deal" sometimes can unfortunately result in unanticipated disastrous results. Therefore, it is always a good idea to make sure that in addition to getting acceptable prices, your supplier makes an equal effort to provide real substance in the product or service you are purchasing.
This simple, but, important principle is certainly applicable to the drapes and blinds you purchase. One way that many window covering suppliers are sometimes able to lure the public with unbelievable offers is because they may simply place less attention and resources on constructing well made products.
Although using quality fabrics and materials is more expensive for the manufacturer, the value is passed on to you in both the durability and appearance of your drapes and blinds.
At American Draperies & Blinds, Inc., we continue to pursue what made us famous over five decades ago. That is, we make an honest and sincere effort to manufacture strong durable window coverings at very competitive prices.
As you compare the various drapes and blinds manufacturers, be sure to consider several factors. Moreover, in addition to inquiring about prices, it is wise to ask a prospective supplier such questions as:
Regarding Draperies:
| 1. | Will the vendor offer you a Lifetime Warranty on all sewing, seams, and workmanship? |
| 2. | Do the drapes have double fullness in them (200%) or is less material simply used for the manufacturer to save money? The result can be very skimpy looking drapery. |
| 3. | Is the top of the drapery (the heading) constructed with a strong crinoline that will not tear, ball-up, or rip during cleaning? |
| 4. | Is the thread used in making the draperies a good cotton polyester thread that will not disintegrate after only a few years in sunlight as cheaper nylon filament often does? |
| 5. | Is the bottom of the drapery double hemmed to give additional weight to the drapery for a better overall appearance? |
| 6. | Are the bottom corners of the draperies sewn closed to prevent them from coming apart or tearing? |
| 7. | Will the drapery supplier provide you with clear easy to read billings. Can they specialize their billing to suit the particular needs of your company? Clear tailor made billing is an important consideration for accounting, tax purposed, and correct application of payments. |
| 8. | Does the supplier offer only a few fabrics? Or, do they carry a wide selection of fabrics suitable for whatever rental unit situation you might encounter such as the need for washable fabrics, insulated, fine fabrics for upgrading, budget draperies, insulated drapes to reduce utility costs, fire retardant/flame proof, or durable cotton fabrics. |
| 9. | What type of drapery rods does the supplier carry? Although there are only a few primary drapery hardware manufacturers, they each carry several grades of rods. Does your supplier only carry a cheap grade that may not withstand tenant abuse and continue to operate relatively maintenance free? |
Regarding Horizontal Mini-Blinds:
| 1. | Do they offer the thickest slats available? Specifically ask for .007 or .009 thick slats. Most blind companies use .005 or .006 gauge slats. Stronger gauge ensures that the slats will bounce back undamaged even when pulled down 10" to 14". |
| 2. | Does the manufacturer use long lasting metal mechanical parts, rather than plastic? |
| 3. | Is the headrail made out of 1.5" wide 25 gauge tough steel baked enamel scratch resistant finish? Or is it damage-prone aluminum? |
| 4. | Are the mini-blinds made right here in America with great long lasting American quality? |
| 1. | Is your drapery/blinds manufacturer a local company? If they are located far away, how do they propose to quickly resolve problems that may occur in the future? |
| 2. | Does the vendor or manufacturer demonstrate their confidence in their product by offering a Lifetime Warranty on all mechanical parts and workmanship? |
| 3. | Does the company offer free shipping? |
| 4. | Ask if their window coverings are made in a foreign country that could hold risks of potential lead poisoning. |
All of these factors should be taken into consideration before selecting a company to supply you with replacement draperies or blinds.
