The Value of Insulated Drapery Fabrics

Back to Articles

By purchasing a well made insulated suede back drapery fabric, you receive several outstanding benefits.

First, in general, insulated drapery fabrics tend to last longer. The chief culprit in terms of drapery damage is oftentimes simple sun rot of the material. That is, exposure to intense sunlight or windows that are subject to extreme afternoon heat frequently cause damage or disintegration of the drapery fibers. A strong thick cotton-based insulated suede backing will protect the face cloth against damaging sunrot.

Second, insulated draperies also provide complete privacy for your tenants. This is especially significant for bedroom units or ones located near walkways or lights.

Third, thick suede back drapery fabrics provide up to 50% insulation both against sweltering summer heat as well as winter cold. In fact, they provide far superior insulation compared to mini-blinds which, at best, only provide about 10% insulation.

The following represents some important points when purchasing insulated drapery fabrics:

A) Foremost, invest in value. That means only purchase a cotton-based or cotton polyester face cloth. These will last much longer than a synthetic (such as polyester) fabric with a backing.

B) Also, only select a suede or cotton-based insulated backing. These will not crack, peel, or adhere to damp windows. They are superior to the cheaper latex or rubber type backings that are usually found on inexpensive drapery fabrics.

C) Smart use of insulated draperies includes leaving the draperies drawn closed during either hot or cold weather. Also, to warm a room, open your insulated draperies in intense sunlight (afternoon) to allow heat into the room. Conversely, by closing your draperies, you can effectively reduce heat from entering.

If you would like several more years of life out of your draperies, remember these simple rules: 1) Purchase a thick cotton-based face cloth or cotton polyester drapery in order to receive greater durability. 2) To further extend the life of your drapes even more, invest in a durable cotton or suede insulated backing.

This type of drapery will give you several years longer usage than a synthetic one for only a few dollars more.
